Okay okay it is one of my favorite times of the year– there are giveaways on so many blogs this week, and really who can visit all 1,000 or so blogs that will participate? Not me..I average about 200. Well this time I am participating, last time I did my OLD blog saw over 900 hits in 2 days…Yikes! So hopefully you will come for the giveaway, but then just maybe some of you will come back to visit again..

Since most of you are here for your very first visit, Im Hollie, a common mom who like to find ways to save and still have lots of fun. Some of you may recognize me from one of my older blogs. I was really cheap at one time, but in these tough times Iam finding it more common that moms especially are looking for ways to save, so that is where the title common cents Mom comes from.

What am I giving away?  1,111 American cents, to be delivered via paypal. So that makes it $11.11.

To enter the  giveaway it is easy all you have to have is a paypal acct if you don’t please get one at Paypal. As well please in your comment tell me your best money saving tip..I will feature some of them in the weeks ahead and if I do I will be linking back to your blog. So how do you save and have fun? Now I know that lots of you will be on the run this week as you try to visit lots of blogs so thanks for stopping by.

For more great giveaways go to Bloggy giveaways……

By the way this giveaway ends Feb 1 st, at 12:01 am EST. I will post on Feb 2nd the winner who will be picked by random number generator.

Menu planning – sounds boring, but when I’m consistent, we eat cheaper, and better, and have more leftover money for activities, We also got a membership to the local zoo, which we frequent, and that has saved us a lot of money on a fun activity.

One money saving tip I have is to call the cable company about every 6 months and ask for a better deal or special. Each time this has saved me around $15 a month.

Instead of buying paper towels, we buy towels from theraglady.com and use them in the kitchen instead. When they are dirty, I just throw them in the wash and they are ready to go again. I also make our napkins out of fabric and we don’t need to buy them either. I also ALWAYS do a google search for any coupon codes available anytime I am going to buy something online.

My money saving tip is to buy bulk discounted meats… find out when your grocery store discounts their meats and go and stock up. For a time saving tip go home and cook up the meat for example ground beef… and then put the cooked ground beef in ziplock bags and freeze… then when you are in a hurry to make dinner you can just pull out some meat and make sheppard’s pie or many other things.
    Thanks for the giveaway…

A lot of people don’t think it’s actually saving money at the time, but I try to buy multiple items (like toilet paper or canned goods) every other week so that I don’t have to spend that much needed money on the food the next week.

Instead of going bowling (which costs money) but still have fun, we take our dog to the park or even make our own bowling game with 2 liter bottles (filled and then unfilled). As the “bowling ball”, we use a basketball for the filled bottles and a tennis ball for the unfilled!

My money saving tip: Online coupons! You cna save a bundle. Try google to find them, a lot of great online coupon codes aren’t advertised on the retailers website. Around Christmas, I found a Sephora.com coupon code via Google. My entire order would have been $70. With the coupon code I found, it only cost me $48 with FREE shipping. Woohoo!

    Many thanks!

  41. January 28, 2009 12:54 am

I always shop the sales and match up my coupons with the sales. Then if the store is out of something at that price I get a raincheck. Always ask for a higher number than you think you need when getting a raincheck! You can always buy less at that price, but you can’t buy more.

  42. January 28, 2009 1:48 am

Interesting number there… 1111… there’s a lot of mystery surrounding that number. As a kid I used to wake up frequently at night and the clock would say 11:11. Weird.

    Great giveaway.

  53. January 28, 2009 2:30 pm

My tip is to Stay Home! IF I don’t go out shopping, I don’t get tempted to buy. If I tell myself I can’t run to the grocery store at the last minute then I will be creative and use what’s on hand to make supper, or I will plan better next time to have frugal ingredients on hand. If I stay home instead of running to McDonalds, I save money AND my kids eat healthier AND they learn to entertain themselves instead of having to hang out in the germy ball pit. Plus I have time to keep things tidy, time to think, time to pray, time to make things nice so my husband comes home to a peaceful home.

Plan your meals according to what’s on sale in the flyers. It’ll save lots of money! Also, looking at your current supplies to see what things you’re starting to run out of – if you give yourself more time to buy them, then you can look for sales on those items.

Shop by unit price. The large size is not always the cheapest. The same with generic or store brand, it’s also not always the best deal. Most stores have the unit price right on the shelf. I also make sure to try to check each time. Prices do change so what’s the best deal one week, won’t be the best the next.

11:11 is make a wish time.
I am focusing on how much I spend and not how much I “save” – if I save 90% but still spend $2 on a product I don’t need, I haven’t really saved at all. It’s a good mindset for me.

Money saving tip – coupons of course…also for me, if it is an item over $10 I really think..do I really need this. A lot of times the answer is no and I go on..It helps having a limit I make myself think a little harder on.

My tip is to think before buying. So often we see something and “have to have it” then it sits or we see it cheaper or we really do not need it. My husband teases me all the time because I think, walk around, think more and then will walk away because I do not need it, just had an emotional I want it. Very rarely have I been sorry I walked away, but way too often I have been ruing the thought of spending the money on something not needed.

Set a budget! I have my husband take out my grocery budget at the beginning of the month. Yes, sometimes I go over, but if I don’t know how much I have left to spend I OVER spend… like today… at Walmart… where my list had six items on it and I came away with 19. Problem. Somewhere. I also had to “borrow (read, put it on a card)” from next months budget.

My best money saving tip is to plan your dinners for one week and do the shopping all at once. I know many people already do this, but we were going each and every night to pick up something for dinner and we were spending around $20 on each of these trips! We just started doing the meal planning and the first week we cam in around $55 for the week and this past week we came in at $45!!! We have already saved $100 by making this change!!!!

This one seems pretty simple, but when I tell my friends about it, they always wonder why they hadn’t done it before! I like to buy a whole chicken at the grocery store, season it, roast it, and then use the leftover chicken in casseroles and for chicken salad sandwiches. I know so many people who buy boneless, skinless chicken breasts for recipes that call for chicken pieces-what a waste of money!

One of my favorite (and frugal) gift ideas:

    Homemade Gift Certificates and/or Coupons:

I love this idea and do this often! Simply put together a coupon booklet based on the recipients’ interests. You could also do this as a meal of the month/dessert of the month club gift. Include 12 different coupons, each with a different meal to be given for the corresponding month.

For kids, you could include a trip to the zoo, $5 in a Toy Store, Pizza and Movie night, etc.

    The possibilities are endless!
